In a troubled world why
talking is good for you!
Last year, my mother and father were both killed in a tragic accident. I was devastated. My family arrived from all over the country to attend the funeral, and afterwards we started the task of packing up all their possessions. During the packing it became evident that some of my siblings had strong feelings about having certain things, and they didn’t hesitate to make them known. Suffice to say, a huge family argument started, ending in two of my brothers walking out.
I was so upset – I just kept thinking if only my parents could see us now – they would be so disappointed. Being the eldest in the family I felt it was up to me to sort things out. I made the suggestion that we just put their things in storage and give ourselves a few weeks to calm down and deal with some of our grief. I went home in floods of tears – I just didn’t know how to deal with all this – I didn’t want to be fighting over “stuff” and I just missed my mum and dad so much.
I was able to speak to a lovely reader who helped me talk through my feelings over the sudden loss of my parents. I was so grateful for the caring and gentle way she talked to me and she was also able to help me with some suggestions of how to deal with my brothers and sisters.
When it came time to get back together we had all calmed down. I suggested that we look at each possession and talk about some memories connected with it. We laughed, we cried, and it ended up being a day that my siblings and I will treasure forever.
