How to build a healthy relationship

09 March 2014

For many of us our relationships can seem like a lot of work until you sit back and realise just how lucky you are. Strong, healthy relationships require significant effort; and often require compromise and sacrifice from both you and your partner-which is difficult, but undoubtedly worth it in the long run. So how do you get the most out of your relationship?

Keep your promises: When you tell partner that you will do something, do it! Failure to do so can easily erode trust over time and makes it difficult for your partner to count on you being there for them. In order to survive, your relationship needs trust.

Be apologetic: If you know you have done something to hurt your partner- even if it wasn’t intentional, admit your mistake and apologise for hurting them. Do not let pride get in the way of a promising relationship.

Listen: Sometimes, all your partner needs is for you just to listen to them and be sympathetic of their problems. Be attentive to your partner’s emotions and try to give them what they want.

Be affectionate: Your partner should know that you love them even when we don’t show it. However do not rely on this; the strongest relationships use affection to show love. Whether it’s a kiss, hug or backrub, get in the habit of being more affectionate today.

Be open: Do your relationship a huge favour by making an effort to be more open with eachother-especially your feelings-whether they be good or bad! Being open allows trust and honesty to flow in your relationship, and allows both you and your partner to feel safe in your relationship.
